Cyrtomium falcatum – Japanese Holly Fern

Cyrtomium falcatum, commonly known as the Japanese Holly Fern, is a handsome evergreen fern with glossy, deep green fronds that have an unusual holly-like shape.

Unlike many ferns, its bold foliage has a slightly exotic look, making it a fantastic way to bring year-round structure and interest to shady areas of the garden. The evergreen fronds are particularly useful for adding colour during the winter months when many other plants have died back.

Planting & Care

Plant your Japanese Holly Fern in moist, free-draining soil or good-quality compost in partial shade. It is particularly happy in sheltered, woodland-style areas where it is protected from strong sunlight.

Water regularly during dry periods, especially when grown in containers. Avoid very dry conditions and protect from the harshest winter weather while the plant is establishing.

In spring, remove any old, damaged or untidy fronds to encourage fresh new growth and keep the plant looking its best.
