Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’ – Zebra Grass

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’, commonly known as Zebra Grass, is a striking ornamental grass with unusual horizontal bands of yellow and green across its long, arching leaves.

The bold striped foliage gives this grass plenty of interest throughout the growing season, while its tall, upright habit makes it an excellent choice for adding height, structure and movement to borders.

In late summer and autumn, delicate flower plumes appear above the foliage, adding another layer of interest. The stems and seed heads can be left standing through winter, providing a beautiful display when covered in frost and offering useful shelter for overwintering wildlife.

Planting & Care

Plant Miscanthus ‘Zebrinus’ in free-draining soil or good-quality compost in full sun or partial shade. It is a tough and relatively low-maintenance grass once established.

Water regularly while young and during prolonged dry periods. Once established, it is reasonably drought tolerant.

Leave the old foliage and flower stems standing over winter to enjoy the winter display and provide shelter for beneficial insects. Cut the old growth back to around ground level in late winter or early spring, before fresh new shoots appear.
