Gaultheria procumbens (Wintergreen / Eastern Teaberry)
A low-growing evergreen prized for its attractive foliage and festive berries. This compact, creeping plant forms a dense carpet of dark green leaves, often flushed with red or metallic tones in winter. From mid to late summer, it produces small white, urn-shaped flowers, which are followed by clusters of bright red berries that last well into winter.
Growing to around 10–15cm (4–6") tall with a spread of 30–45cm (12–18"), Gaultheria procumbens is perfect for shady spots, banks, borders, underplanting trees, or even in seasonal containers. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and thrives in partial to full shade.
This hardy and easy-to-grow plant is valued not only for its ornamental appeal but also for its wildlife interest, providing colour and shelter from autumn through spring. Recognised with the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it’s a reliable choice for year-round garden interest.
